According to the American Tinnitus Association, the condition described as “the perception of sound when no actual external noise is present,” often manifesting as buzzing or hissing noises in the ears.

Shatner, 94, recently partnered with the nonprofit organization Tinnitus Quest to help spread awareness about the condition by sharing his personal experience in a candid new video.

“Over the years, I’ve had many ups and downs with my tinnitus,” Shatner says in the new video. “I know from firsthand experience just how difficult it can get.”

He continued, “It”s a diverse condition that comes in different degrees of severity. About 1–2% of the population suffer from a chronic, debilitating form of tinnitus. There are no effective treatments—and that’s why we need more research.”

The Emmy-winning actor went on to explain the mission of Tinnitus Quest, a “new nonprofit with the simple and bold goal of silencing tinnitus once and for all.”

“It’s run by tinnitus patients together with some of the top researchers in the field,” he added, noting, “The more money we can raise for Tinnitus Quest, the quicker we can find a solution to help the millions of people suffering.”

Shatner concluded by telling viewers, “Thank you so much for watching, and I hope you will consider donating to Tinnitus Quest.”
