Focus Features has released the first trailer for “Bugonia,” the latest collaboration between director Yorgos Lanthimos and star Emma Stone.
“Bugonia” is a remake of the South Korean sci-fi comedy “Save the Green Planet.” It revolves around two conspiracy-obsessed friends who kidnap the high-powered CEO of a major corporation because they are convinced she’s an alien intent on destroying Earth. In addition to Stone, Jesse Plemons stars alongside Aidan Delbis, Stavros Halkias and Alicia Silverstone. Lanthimos is directing from a script by Will Tracy.
Stone and Lanthimos are also on board as producers — via their respective companies Fruit Tree and Pith shingles — in their latest team-up following “Poor Things,” “The Favourite” and “Kinds of Kindness.” Producers also include Ed Guiney and Andrew Lowe of Element Pictures, Ari Aster and Lars Knusden of Square Peg, and Miky Lee and Jerry Kyoungboum Ko of CJ ENM.
Speaking with Variety last year, Chairman of Focus Features Peter Kujawski said, “Yorgos Lanthimos is a cinematic visionary with a singular style that has captivated audiences worldwide. We could not be more excited to partner with him, Emma and the incredible teams at Element, Square Peg and CJ ENM to reimagine this twisted and darkly funny story.”
Ko added, “I am thrilled to introduce the intriguing story rooted in Korean Cinema’s hidden gem, in collaboration with the ideal team of talent and producers, alongside the reliable studio. I expect that Yorgos will ignite a dynamic chemical fusion with his unique style and the novelty of the narrative.”
Behind the scenes, Lanthimos has assembled his artisans, including editor Yorgos Mavropsaridis (who has edited all of Lanthimos’ films), cinematographer Robbie Ryan, production designer James Price, and composer Jerskin Fendrix. Johnnie Burn is on board as the film’s sound mixer, and the film’s casting director is Jennifer Venditti.
The film will open in select theaters for a special limited engagement on Oct. 24. followed by a wide expansion on Oct. 31.
