SZA is thanking Beyoncé for a kind gesture tied to her sophomore album.
SZA released her long-awaited sophomore album “SOS” on Dec. 9, 2022, featuring 14 tracks, including “Snooze,” “Love Language,” and “Kill Bill,” the latter of which earned the artist her first No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in 2023, notes Billboard.
“The sound is a little bit of literally everything. It’s a little angry as an overview, but some of it is really beautiful and soft and heartfelt. It’s about heartbreak, it’s about being lost, it’s about being pissed,” she told People in regards to the album. “It’s my first album in five years, so I’m ready to be a different person and step into this new part of my life.”
Like with any music project, collaborations with various producers, songwriters, and other artists are key to help an album reach the finish line. It appears SZA’s project was no different as Beyoncé also contributed to her first single, “SOS,” which features an interpolation of Beyoncé’s song “Listen,” audible at the 1:41 mark.
What’s more, SZA claims she owes half her publishing from the single to the “Cowboy Carter,” artist. However, it appears she won’t have to worry about paying up — for now. SZA shared the information in a comment section of an Instagram post shared by social media personality Zuhaila Jama.
“I literally owe her half my publishing off interpolation alone on ‘SOSm’ and she never pressed me lmao — a generous QUEEN,” she commented under the post.
This isn’t the first time Beyoncé has shown her support for SZA.
In 2024, SZA earned three awards at the Grammys for Best R&B Song (“Snooze”); Best Progressive R&B Album (“SOS”) and Best Pop Duo/Group Performance (“Ghost in the Machine”), the Grammy Awards’ site shows.
In celebration, HipHopDx reports Beyoncé sent a bouquet of flowers accompanied by a note that read, “I’m so happy for you beautiful! Watching you grow and watching you win is an honor. Sending you a huge congrats talented queen. All my love and respect, B.”
SZA responded:
“Thank you for seeing me before anyone else saw me. Thank you for making me feel valuable when I was the tiniest in the room. Thank you for shining your light on me and pouring into me with Goddess level kindness. May God continue to protect and bless you queen.”
