Crochet cited preparing for the second half of the season as a reason why he’s sitting out this year’s ASG.

Red Sox ace Garrett Crochet is honored to be named a 2025 MLB All-Star, but he decided Friday not to pitch in MLB’s All-Star Game in Atlanta.
The 25-year-old southpaw explained that he’s focused on something bigger this season: Crochet wants to save his innings for Boston in the second half of the year and help the team make a playoff push.
“For me, it’s just looking at my past four years,” Crochet said of his decision to pull out of the All-Star Game (via MassLive’s Chris Cotillo). “In 2022, I threw zero innings. In ‘23, I threw 13. Last year, I threw 146 and this year I’m on pace for 200. From my standpoint, it makes no sense to make that 201 to throw in a game that doesn’t determine my team’s fate throughout the season.
“Especially because we’re looking at the postseason,” he continued. “If I threw 20 innings in the postseason, I’m almost 100 innings over last year which was over 100 innings above the year prior. It just didn’t make sense to me.”
If Crochet had opted to pitch in this year’s ASG, he likely would have only thrown one inning for the American League on July 15. However, given that he will start for the Red Sox on Saturday against the Rays, he would be appearing in the All-Star Game on three days’ rest.
Crochet said that timing factored into his decision to rest his arm.
He also cited his 2024 All-Star Game appearance as a reason why he wants to sit out this year’s event.
“It’s a huge honor to be there,“ Crochet said. ”I threw last year with it being my first one. If I were to go next year, I would probably throw. But just with the way my continued growth is, and my workload ceiling, I’d rather not add to it.”
Last year, the lefty tossed one inning in his first ASG, which took place in Texas. Crochet recorded one strikeout and allowed one hit, representing the Chicago White Sox.
This year, he was a no-doubt All-Star selection. Entering Friday, Crochet leads all MLB pitchers in strikeouts with 151. He has started 19 games and thrown 120 ⅓ innings and owns a 2.39 ERA and 1.09 WHIP. Batters are hitting .217 off of him.
Sitting the game out is probably the best idea for Crochet. The Red Sox will need him to be at 100 percent in the second half as they aim to make the playoffs for the first time since 2021.
Though Crochet won’t appear in the ASG, he will be present for the game alongside fellow Red Sox All-Stars Alex Bregman and Aroldis Chapman. Bregman similarly will not play in the event.
