Rumour Mongering: Luis Diaz Top Target for Bayern and Barcelona

Knowing how or when to move on and talk about other topics following a tragedy like the death of Liverpool and Portugal forward Diogo Jota and his brother Andre Silva in an auto accident late last week isn’t an easy question.

Particularly when moving on will inevitably mean sooner or later having to direct attention towards the world of transfer rumours, unavoidable as they are during the offseason for a football club or a site covering a football club.

Even if you might not be ready for it, though, the rest of the world has a way of moving on and forcing your hand. Which brings us back to transfer rumours and in this case to Luis Diaz, who is today linked with two possible moves.

Those are Bayern Munich and Barcelona. Neither are new rumours, exactly. Both, though, had largely disappeared in recent weeks with Liverpool reluctant to sell and the German and Spanish sides believed to have moved on.

Now, they’re back, by way of Bild in Germany and Mundo Deportivo in Spain. This comes attached to growing rumblings Diaz wants out after Liverpool rejected his push to sign a new contract. His current deal has two years to run.

Bayern are more determined to sign a forward—already a target heading into the summer window—following a serious injury to Jamal Musiala, while Barcelona had wanted Bilbao’s Nico Williams but he has since signed a new deal.

How much this transfer story cycle is being driven by the clubs involved, then, and how much it might be driven by Diaz’ agent is a fair question. It seems clear, though, that either Diaz is wanted—or, alternately, that Diaz wants out.

As for Liverpool’s side of the story, the fact Diaz could very plausibly now be the top winger target for both Bayern and Barcelona should serve as something of a warning for how difficult he could be to replace should the club sell.

Letting the Colombian depart could leave the Reds, who having lost Jota to tragedy are already down a forward as of today, desperately scrambling for a new top winger in a market where the top clubs see Diaz as the best option.
